After 64 years together John and Lou Marry

This story may be a little old but it is set to warm your hearts on this cold Brisbane day. Pictured are Louis Halsey & John Spofford Morgan, probably the most adorable older gay couple you will ever hear about.

On May 17, 1947 at around 10:30 John Spofford Morgan stoped off a The New Verdi, a gay bar that was referred to at that time as an “old friend joint”, after a long night studying at Columbia Library.

That night Louis Halsey walked in and it was “Love at first sight,” as Lou says. “Was it?” John wonders. “For me it was slower.”

In any case, Lou and John spent that night together, just as they have spent most nights for the 64 years ensuing.

Now 94 years old John is recovering from a broken hip but otherwise as handsome as Lou, 88, says he always was.

The image above shows the couple on a beach in Beirut in 1952. Lou has the pompadour look like James Dean while John looks like a young JFK except, as his mother used to complain, “we have chins.”

Both men served bravely in the Navy in World War II, but on different oceans, as in a way they were from different worlds on land.

The pair ignored domestic partnership when it came along. John described it as “a halfway step” which leads me to wonder how he would react to a ‘relationship registry’?

But when the law passed for same sex marriage in June 2011, they knew they would take the step.

A small ceremony, with a minister and three witnesses, was held in their Village apartment on November 11. They chose that date because for years they noticed the time 11:11 on the clock by the bed.

They did not exchange rings or gifts (except bourbon). But Lou has declared that John shed a tear on the day.

“Did I?” John wonders.

It seems like such a joke to think these two men who fought in a world war and have been together for over 64 years had to wait so long to marry, yet Kim Kardashian could marry a man she hardly knew for a whopping 72 days. Which story fits more with the so called sanctity of marriage?
