Wallaby’s Flanker David Pocock More big name Aussies have joined the growing ranks in public support of marriage equality this week. Celebrities Hugh Jackman, David Stratton and Oscar winner Lizzy Gardner have signed on to a marriage equality declaration that calls for an end to discrimination of same sex couples. The National Convenor for Australian Marriage Equality, Alex Greenwich, has welcomed their support. Hugh and the crew join a diverse group of other prominent supporters of the marriage equality movement, including Derryn Hinch, Wallaby’s Flanker David Pocock (Pictured), and former NSW Premiers Nick Greiner and Kristina Keneally. “The message for Tony Abbott and the Coalition is that marriage equality is not a left-wing or Greens’ issue, but one that’s embraced by mainstream Australia,” Greenwich continued.
“Hugh, David, and Lizzie are all happily married straight supporters of equality. They know how important marriage is to a couple and their families, and like most Australians they don’t feel same-sex couples should be denied the meaning and benefits of marriage,” Greenwich said.
Film Director and Screenwriter, Stephan Elliot (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) also lent his support and called for Aussie celebrities to join him in solidarity for marriage equality. An Equality Dinner was held this week at Quay Restaurant in Sydney, with Elliot announcing more supporters of the cause. “Australians are more accepting of same-sex couples than ever, it is time our laws reflected this, and this year our politicians will have the opportunity to make a positive change for good by supporting marriage equality,” Mr Elliot said.
