9-1 in favour of banning bareback sexual activity Los Angeles is getting strict on mandatory condoms in porn and the porn companies aren’t happy about it! The LA City Council voted on a law that will require porn actors to wear condoms in their productions from now on, a move that has shocked industry insiders, with many threatening to move their productions out of LA, which is known as the porn capital in the US. City council leaders fore-went a ballot issue and instead voted 9-1 in favour of banning bareback sexual activity in all straight and gay porn films, an issue that many believe is so common sense it seems pointless to spend money on enforcing it, because if the law is broken, it will be caught on film. This isn’t enough to deter the industry though as Steven Hirsch, co-founder and co-chairman of ‘Vivid’, believes it will simply stop people filming in Los Angeles. ‘Vivid’ is one of the largest companies in erotic filmmaking, and Hirsch is certainly aiming for a move, despite LA homing 90% of productions. The industry makes approximately $8 billion dollars a year, counting in internet downloads, sex toy sales and dance club admissions, and consumers have said, according to Adult Video News editor Mark Kernes, that they don’t wish to watch films where the actors use condoms as it takes away from the fantasy of it all. The industry claim they regularly perform sex tests on their actors, requiring them to be tested for STDs every 30 days, and since 2004 there have been no cases of HIV linked directly to porn films, and with the new condom law, many believe it will only add a greater risk as areas outside LA could potentially introduce risk if regular testing wasn’t kept up. But whilst the industry stand by their facts, actor Derrick Burts begs to differ, as the 24 year old actor contracted HIV in 2010 from working on gay and straight adult film sets and he has since called for condoms to be mandatory.
The ordinance will come into effect in 90 days and will be enforced by police checks, the cost of which will be borne from the pornographers.
