CAMP!

CAMP!

CAMP!

One of the coolest things about being gay is that we don't have to conform to the stereotypes of being a typical Aussie bloke.  We have the freedom to be camper than Boy George on acid and more masculine than Ian Roberts and we can even mix it up.  It's fabulous talking to a leather clad hyper-masculine muscle bound guy looking like they're on a break from military porn and hearing them complain about how devassssssstated he is that Fifita his Latino toy poodle has chewed his dried petunia arrangement.  What's interesting is that rather than all of us embracing the fabulous diversity we have in our communities on the "camp continuum," people are often judged and condemned.  This might be understandable coming from shoppers in Big W Caboolture as you mince past wearing a Liza Minelli sparkly puce evening gown, but not by our own people!   Our gay communities can be more homophobic than Rev. Fred Nile after a prolonged prostate examination.    Gay guys vary with degrees of masculinity, some grew up running Tonka Trucks into wasp nests and others were making Madonna outfits for Barbie.  The real problem is 'internalized homophobia'.  This is the absorption from a very young age of the crazy homophobic beliefs that people around us express.  It can create in a lot of gay people a real hate for anything that might appear to be slightly feminine.  Many people spent their adolescence doing everything to look as straight as possible, often repressing who they really are.   So when people judge others for being too camp, they might actually be expressing a sense of feeling bad about themselves.  So next time you get the urge to camp it up a bit, let it go honey.  If you feel yourself judging someone else for being too effeminate, try yelling this out at a gay club instead "sssweety, slap my crack and call me Marge!"
