Obama takes new HIV test now available in Queensland Undoubtedly many have heard the news that HIV numbers have risen in Queensland over the last 10 years. In particular, despite recent claims figures would be down in 2011, it appears rates are still on the rise. In addition to the HIV epidemic, syphilis diagnoses have been on the rise in South West Queensland in recent times. - contact BILL on 4616 6459 or 0418 718 586 (Discression assured)
There is a clear need for action on the subject. Toowoomba Health Service has begun researching the rise, asking gay men to pass on an open letter to sexual partners, gay or bi men plus their online "hook-up" websites. The service is keen for all sexually active gay and bi men that have not been tested in the Darling Downs to use a new self test kit which offers gay and bi men in south west Queensland the opportunity to have a non-invasive HIV self-test at a place and time convenient to them.
The test uses a mouth swab, no blood needs to be drawn. The program, however, is not totally anonymous, as those tested will need to be contacted with results.
If HIV is detected early enough, there are treatment methods that can dramatically minimise the impact of the virus. For example, there is a course of drugs which can prevent HIV, called PEP (or post exposure prophylaxis). Treatment must be started within 72 hours of unsafe sex, and it is then unlikely you will contract HIV.
Gay and Bi men and their female partners are being urged to take advantage of this opportunity by phoning and ordering a kit which is sent out and returned by mail. A nurse can guide you on the phone while you do the test at home if needed.
The self test kit is completely free, but due to funding restrictions it is only available to those living in South West Queensland.
