MY MARRIAGE STORY

A new website advocating marriage equality in Australia has been launched in support of a national campaign dedicated to allowing all Australians to legally marry their partner of choice.

The site, mymarriagestory.com.au, was created with the hope that Australians from all walks of life will use the site to share their story and why they are an example of why marriage equality is an essential part of Australia’s development.

One such participant is Aaron Minto of South Australia. Aaron explains that it was during a temporary residence in Europe where he met and married his husband Oscar. Due to Australia’s marriage laws, immigration was exceedingly difficult for Oscar when joining Aaron in Australia as their marriage was deemed illegal by the government. It complicated matters, not only for the couple but for their families and friends, as well as preventing a skilled medical practitioner from working in a very important field.

Queensland coordinator for Marriage Equality Phil Browne stressed to QNews the importance of equality.  "The government doesn't give me the choice if I want to marry or not and this makes me a second class citizen . I didn't get involved in this because I necessarily want to get married myself, I got involved because I want equal rights to my straight friends and family. It's all about equality, Browne said.

Stories like Aaron's will help gay and lesbian Australians, and organisations, to identify and promote stories that show Members of Parliament why marriage equality matters.
