MYTHS OF THE ORIGINS OF SAME SEX ATTRACTION

A lot of time and effort has gone into research and theorising about what causes someone to be attracted the same sex.  Fundamentalist Christians use the outdated theory that it is a choice or it is due to childhood damage.  This enables them to say that people can change their orientation by repairing childhood psychological damage.  None of this is based on evidence; it is wrong and has been shown to cause psychological harm.

Many bisexual, lesbian and gay people also spend time trying to work out what caused them to be same sex attracted. This is understandable but the problem starts when you are trying to look for something that must have gone wrong to cause it. People often feel it might have been due to sexually abuse or that they had a bad relationship with a parent of the same sex. There is no evidence that any of these things can create a sexual orientation. No matter how dominant your Mum or how passive your Dad was, this can’t make you want to have bum fun with other guys.

Research has clearly shown over the years that there is not one cause of homosexuality or heterosexuality. It is a complex interaction between biological and environmental factors. The evidence strongly suggests though that there are many biological causes than anything else. My favourite genetic research is the discovery of a mutant mouse missing the FucM gene (true!). They reject male sexual advances; mount females and engage in other masculine behaviour. I’ve seen photos and they even have short hair! It is clear that same sex attraction it is a ‘hardwired’ reality the same as the colour of your skin. Humans are made up of a rich diversity of sexual orientations and genders and the only real issue is not what made us gay lesbian, bisexual or trans, but to fully accept and value yourself just the way you are.
