QNews would like to welcome Queensland’s newly established organisation acting as a source of advocacy and information for GLBTIQ families in the state, Rainbow Families Queensland.

Rainbow Families is a not for profit community organisation with a clear focus on raising awareness of rainbow families and building strong relationships within the community.

It is made up of a group of volunteers from a range of backgrounds and professions dedicated to supporting rainbow families, and prospective rainbow families, and creating awareness among the general population about rainbow families.

While the GLBTIQ community has a number of wonderful support services none of them is solely dedicated to advocating for the rights of the thousands of rainbow families in Queensland. There is also a lack of resources available for professionals who come into contact with rainbow families, such as teachers, day care workers.

With the support of the Queensland Association of Healthy Communities (QAHC), in just a few short months a website has been established where families can get information about a range of topics, including planning and having a family, how to talk to children about your family and even coming out to your kids.

The website also features forums where people can ask for feedback about the most complex issues or simply make a play date with families in their area.

As the organisation grows the focus will be on educating the wider community and acting in an advocacy role to consistency pursue equality, acceptance and support for GBLTIQ families.
