New QAHC Project: LGBT Seniors Visiting Service

By Lara Hill

Despite the recent funding disputes Healthy Communities has a new project underway, linking trained volunteer visitors with isolated LGBT seniors who might find it difficult to leave the house and stay connected with their community.

QAHC is seeking volunteer visitors to attend a training day in early July and then be willing to commit to regular visits of one or two hours weekly or fortnightly for a minimum six months.

The project is a great opportunity to connect with an older generation through regular visits, while doing something worthwhile for the community.

Project Officer Ann Matson explained that project aims to help the health and wellbeing of LGBT seniors.

“It’s a simple thing but it goes a long way, these sort of people are isolated from friends and family for whatever reason and simply having a cup of tea and a chat is a way for them to feel connected”

If you are interested in helping, an information session will take place at Healthy Communities on June 20, from 6-7:30pm, followed by a full day of training in July.

Sometimes the small things you do can make a big impact in reducing someone’s loneliness.
