Matthew Mitcham Aussie diving champion Matthew Mitcham is geared up for the upcoming London Olympics despite a long term injury sustained in April last year. After some serious considerations the diver is confident he would still qualify. The diver has only been back in action for a few weeks after months of intense rehabilitation and again proves his determination after his gold medal in the 2008 Beijing games came after years battling depression and anxiety. Mitcham has taken the first step towards his goal at the national
championships in Adelaide this week where he won the10m platform without agrivating his injury. “The dives that have the most loading on my abs I’ve had to scale down because I’m still suffering from pain... I don’t want anything to jeopardise my chances of winning a gold medal in London.” We know we’ll be rooting for Mitcham as he soldiers on as both an outstanding Australian athlete and a popular gay role model, being one of Australia’s first openly gay spor tsmen to compete in the Olympics. He is also an advocate for gay pride and equality in the sports arena... and all the while, looking damn fine in his Speedos. Go Matthew!
