Puss In Boots

Originally conceived as a direct-to-DVD release, the furry feline from ‘Shrek’ gets his own film on the big screen - in 3D no less! Set as a prequel, ‘Puss In Boots’ (voiced ever so charmingly by Antonio Banderas) tells of how the legendary lathario became an outlaw. Hoping to clear his name and win back the respect of the town that once adored him, Puss learns of the whereabouts of the my thical magic beans (those from the Jack and the Beanstalk tale) and that the villainous duo Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris) are in possession of them. Joining him on this larger-than-life adventure is sensual burglar Kit ty Sof tpaws (Salma Hayek) and Humpty Dumpty (Zack Galifianakis), who we learn was once a close friend to Puss but is now more of an adversary. As was the case with ‘Shrek’, the storyline references well known fairytales to keep younger audiences at bay, as well as throwing in some silly sight gags, but caters to the older crowd with subtle adult humour - Puss claiming he needs his catnip for medicinal purposes being one prime example. The 3D is wonder fully rendered, as it has been with most animated films to use the technology, and the latin-inspired soundtrack is well catered to the action (as well as the unnecessary but still delight ful dance numbers). The real star though is Banderas who brings such life to this character, and impossible as it may seem, the chemistry he shares with Hayek (who he has starred opposite on several films before) is sizzling, even when it’s just their voices. Far more enjoyable than people may suspect, given the quality of the last few ‘Shrek’ films decreased, ‘Puss In Boots’ should be
a winner this holiday season. ‘Puss In Boots’ opens December 8th.
