Simply Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Mary Poppins is playing now at the Lyric Theatre. Remaking a classic is a risky thing to do, and I must admit that I went along to the opening night of Mary Poppins at QPAC with both excitement and also a little trepidation about what might be dished up after being left somewhat underwhelmed by a few big budget stage musicals in the past. Should you have any similar concerns, please let me put them to rest right now! Mary Poppins is... well...It is perfectly perfect! I had heard some positive reports from friends who had seen the show in Melbourne last year, but their kind words simply did not do the show justice. The costumes, set, music, choreography and special effects were all top notch and every cast member was superb. While the stage version is not quite true to the film, it is however, very much true to the theme and plot of the story and all of the magic is still there to rediscover, and for some it is there to discover for the very first time. Much to my shocked horror, as I was walking into the theatre, my date for the evening turned to me and said, “you know I’ve never actually seen the film.” A couple of hours later he was hooked, suggesting that it would have to be a pretty good film to be anywhere near the stage show! I’ve no doubt that Mary Poppins is going to have a huge season here in Queensland, after all, we do of ten joke about ourselves being the nanny state. Mary Poppins is playing now at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC until 17 March. For tickets, please visit www.qpac.com.au or call 136 246
