Queensland Symphony Orchestra: 5 & 12 February

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra plays the works of modern masters which showcases rare and eclectic works from the 20th and 21st centuries.

In Koelman Plays Bernstein (5 February), Australian conductor Benjamin Northey and acclaimed violinist Rudolf Koelman join the orchestra to perform Leonard Bernstein’s five movement violin concerto, Serenade. Inspired by Plato’s Symposium, each successive movement alludes to a different facet of love; from love as an enchanting fairytale, to the duality of two lovers.

“Bernstein's genius idea to dedicate it to Plato’s timeless Symposium of love, awakens a lot of joyful fantasies not only in the performers, but also in the audience's imagination,” says soloist Koelman.

Then, escape to the rugged plains of Italy with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s performance Pines of Rome (12 February). It begins with Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini Overture, inspired by the turbulent life of the Italian sculptor.

This concert also features acclaimed violinist Rudolf Koelman. Koelman will perform Paganini’s effervescent Violin Concerto No.2. Paganini’s technically demanding score is distinguished by its dramatic, gypsy melodies, which showcase the virtuoso’s skills as a composer.

Cyndi Lauper: Concert Hall, QPAC, 28 & 29 March

Iconic performer Cyndi Lauper was the first artist to have five top ten singles from a debut album which included her mega hit Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Cyndi continues to lead as a singer, songwriter, musician, actress, and activist.

With her recent album Memphis Blues, a collection of blues cover songs, she is once again reinventing herself by putting her unique twist on one of music’s most beloved genres.

In addition to her love of performing, Cyndi is unwavering in her commitment to social activism, creating the True Colors Fund as a show of solidarity against discrimination and to raise awareness about the issues facing the GLBT population.
