RADIO LISTENERS CAN TUNE INTO 4ZZZ EACH WEDNESDAY EVENING TO HEAR YOU ON DYKES ON MYKES, HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH DYKES ON MYKES & WHAT IS YOUR ROLE ON THE SHOW?
I am one of the presenters and panellists on the show and have been doing it since 2003. I became involved while teaching out at Wellington Point, where another Arts teacher asked me if I’d like to be involved (Les Mannering, an ex-announcer). I went for one week and never left.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE YET TO COME ACROSS THE SHOW, WHAT IS DYKES ON MYKES ALL ABOUT? Dykes on Mykes is so much fun. It’s a chance for Me, Ruth and KK to get together and talk sh*t for two hours. We love discovering new music, and talk about things that are happening in the community, and to performers and artists too. We’ve spoken to some amazing people like Leisha Haley, Tegan Quinn from Tegan and Sara, Mia Dyson, Jen Cloher, Deb Conway, and heaps of local acts.
WE ALSO KNOW THAT YOU ARE QUITE MUSICAL TOO, PERFORMING AT DIFFERENT EVENTS AROUND TOWN. WHAT INSTRUMENTS DO YOU PLAY AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST PLACES YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PERFORM? I play a couple, guitar, piano, flute and ukulele, but my favourite at the moment is definitely the ukulele. The most fun I think though was doing a couple of backing vocals on Kristy Apps’ new album ‘Pour Me Out’. I also had the opportunity to produce ‘The Vagina Monologues’ a few years ago, and that was a definite highlight.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL GIGS COMING UP?
I’ve just started a group with Melissa J Evans (from LSG) called ‘Ukulele Sisters’, so keep an eye out for that. It’ll be a comedy thing, I mean, who doesn’t laugh when they hear a ukulele?
ANY PARTING WORDS? Eagles may soar but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines.
Oh… And The Ukulele Sisters are playing with L.S.G. at the L.S.G. Easter Bash, on Sat 3rd April from 2-6pm at the Esk Lyceum Hall. BYO Esky. Please come along!
