DANCE COMPANY TURNS BRISBANE AROUND
Sydney Dance Company's new Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela, is bringing his Company of dancers to Brisbane in the explosion of energy, sound and movement that is 360°.
One of the world's most exciting choreographers, the Barcelona-born, Rafael Bonachela has been described by the London Sunday Times Magazine as “the next big thing” and by ID Magazine as the “hottest of international talent”.
Famed for his collaboration with musicians and designers, Bonachela choreographed Kylie Minogue's flamboyant 2005 Showgirl Tour! Moving effortlessly between the mainstream and the avant-garde, his commissions include work for George Piper Dances, English Chamber Orchestra, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, as well as Tina Turner and Primal Scream.
360º, the first production created in Australia by Sydney Dance Company's new Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, was the explosive offspring of an intense eight week period spent with the company. A firestorm of interest was unleashed when it opened in Sydney in 2008, receiving rave reviews from media and audience members alike, praising its beauty, energy and skill. Many regard this production as one of the most dynamic works Bonachela has ever created.
A self-confessed 'movement junkie', Bonachela is committed to innovation with his motivation stemming from the exploration and experimentation of pure movement. Bonachela's movement communicates in vivid and powerful terms about the human condition and human relationships-the mood ranging from seriousness to sexy - it can be furious, energetic, emotional and liquid.
This brilliant new production combines Bonachela's energetic, unyielding style together with Sydney Dance Company's new line-up of dancers and one of Australia's leading creative designers Tony Assness, with lighting design by Hugh Taranto.
Sydney Dance Company is one of the country's most original and vibrant arts organisations. Performing each year nationally and internationally, they have become one of the most in-demand Australian performing arts companies and an active proponent of Australian dance around the world. The Company's dancers are acclaimed throughout the world for their technical finesse and artistry.
Bonachela says: "My aim is to build a strong company with a singular identity and aesthetic, informed by my enthusiasm to create new work. Out of this vision will emerge a unique signature through work that does not belong to anyone else but us, dance at its highest quality, dance that is synonymous with Sydney Dance Company”.
