Daniel Radlciffe has endured much speculation about his sexuality, but the star says that that he “doesn’t care” and is also campaigning for the safety of Gay and Lesbian youth.
The Harry Potter actor recently revealed in an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz that he is very passionate about the Trevor project, which supports Gay and Lesbian youth.
Radcliffe said gay rights are always something he’s been passionate about. “Because I grew up around gay men, it was always a natural thing to me. It was never something I ever gave a second thought to.”
The Trevor project is a nonprofit organisation that aims to support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and questioning youths.
The creators of a short film “Trevor,” that took home the Oscar for best short in 1994, initiated the project.
Radcliffe has been impressed with the dedication and professionalism of all the volunteers involved in the counselling and support service.
It is the only US 24-hour-a-day support hotline for GLBTQ youth and Radcliffe also told MTV that there would soon be a Trevor Project IPhone application.
Radcliffe spoke quite candidly of his own experiences with homophobia as a child. He said that although he is straight, he was very surprised to hear comments like “homo” and “Poof” at school.
“Some are gay, some are straight — didn’t make any difference to me,” Radcliffe said.
“Now I am in a position where I can help an amazing thing like the Trevor Project.”
Daniel Radcliffe will be lending his name and image to the charity in order to help prolong its existence and positive effect on GLBTQ youth.
“I was talking to one of the [volunteers] who said, ‘I hate the fact that this needs to exist.’ But it’s so important that it does,” he said.
