I Love You, Man is a “bromantic” comedy that examines mateship between two guys. Paul Rudd plays Peter Klaven, a successful young LA real estate agent who proposes to his girlfriend Zooey Rice (Rashida Jones). She, of course, immediately calls her closest friends, while he realizes that he has no close friends – in fact he has no male friends at all. After eavesdropping on Zooey’s bridal shower, Peter learns his lack of male friendship worries Zooey and he embarks on a quest to get some male friends, particularly one to be his best man at his impending nuptials.
Under the guidance of his gay brother, Robbie (Andie Samberg) who knows a thing or two about men, Peter embarks on a series of disastrous “man dates”, but meets Sidney Fife (Jason Segel) at one of his open houses by accident. Sidney openly admits that he has no intention of buying a house, only that he goes to open houses to pick up divorcees for sex.
Sidney and Peter form an unlikely friendship, with Sidney’s free-spirited bachelor ways completely at odds with Peter’s gentlemanly conventionalism. Soon, the friendship begins to encroach on his relationship with Zooey, forcing Peter to make some difficult decisions. Not your average romantic comedy, this one comes complete with the quirkiness that made Zoolander and Meet the Fockers instant hits.
