FAREWELL IAIN
Only days after the death of Erif Benham, the LGBT community was once again rocked by the news of the passing of long term Queensland Pride Editor, Iain Clacher. Iain, who had been a mainstay of the gay and lesbian press in Queensland since the Mid 90’s, was found in his home after suffering a major heart attack aged 43.
Iain, who first took the role as editor in 2001 was a staunch defender of gay and lesbian rights and battled endlessly in the fight for equality.
He was an activist, a journalist, a photographer, a peace maker and a dear friend of the entire Queensland GLBT community, whose strength, dedication, commitment and compassion will be sorely missed. Work colleague and friend Kieren Hunt was shocked and devastated by Iain’s loss.
“ He helped me settle down after I moved here, showed me around on weekends when I was feeling down, took me for drives down the coast or into the mountains and told me about Queensland’s history. “I’m not a big reader, but I always enjoyed reading Iain’s writing, and his photography was brilliant. He was such a great person to work with. He was so happy lately, he’d had a great Christmas and New Year, he was really having a great life and getting out and doing so much. He’ll be sorely missed,”
On top of his work in the gay community, Iain was also a valued member of the Brisbane music scene having continually played in numerous bands since the 1980’s. At time of press, Iain’s funeral was scheduled for 2pm Wed 20th January at Mt Gravatt Crematorium, Mt Gravatt Cemetery. Please check the Courier Mail for any changes.
