Valentine’s Day may be all about love, but the week running 14 Feb-21 Feb is all about sex. The week marks Sexual Health Awareness Week – more commonly referred to as SHAW
SHAW’s theme this year is ‘Let’s Talk about Sex’, and will be targeted at young adults between 18 and 30 years (both gay and straight) living within the Logan, Redcliffe, Ipswich, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba regions.
SHAW tries to encourage lovers and others who are sexually active, to enjoy the experience and intimacy of sex in an open, safe and consensual manner, while looking at sexual health in a broader context, not just the prevention of Sexually Transmissible Infections (STIs). It’s about increasing the skills and knowledge of individuals through access to accurate information to enable them to make informed healthy decisions in relation to their sexual health.
Throughout the week the new Drama Down Under II campaign will be working on encouraging gay men and men who have sex with men to get sexual health checks, and will include a comprehensive website called www.thedramadownunder.info. This website will have information on STIs, sexual health and HIV. A key feature of the site includes a partner notification feature and check up reminders. Men can anonymously notify their sexual partners by SMS or email that they may have been exposed to an STI and should seek a check up. Men can register for a periodic reminder to get a sexual health check up via SMS or email on the site.
