Ever noticed lumps around your anus? Have you got them now? Do they hurt or bleed? Are they worrying you?
The two most common causes are haemorrhoids and warts. Haemorrhoids are engorged blood filled veins which protrude from the anus. Sometimes they result from direct trauma—heavy anal sex or a hard bowel motion can do it. If you are constipated or strain a lot while shitting or heavy lifting this will force those veins out too. They will usually settle with bathing in warm salt water, the application of a local anaesthetic ointment and ensuring that your bowel motions are regular and soft. It is worth getting them checked by your doctor especially if there is a lot of pain or bleeding.
Anal warts are caused by a sexually transmitted virus. They are hard, fleshy protrusions and also occur on the penis or vagina. As long as the virus is active the warts will continue to grow. They can be removed by freezing, surgery or applying chemicals that will physically destroy the wart but won’t actually get rid of the virus that causes them. However, there is a new cream available that helps the body’s immune system to fight the virus, thus getting rid of the problem. Warts take time to go away and can be embarrassing, but they are also very common—around 80% of sexually active adults will be exposed to the wart virus at some time. Not everyone develops warts but many do.
Less common causes of anal lumps include abscesses and tumours. Abscesses result from infected hair follicles or blocked glands and can be treated with antibiotics or lancing. Tumours may require more extensive surgery. If you are at all concerned, then see your doctor now!
