The monthly gathering of OUT, a party catering to all people in the GLBTI community in Cairns is continuing to grow thanks to an influx of gay people to the tropical city.
Every month anywhere from 350 – 600 people gather to party, celebrate and enjoy in one of Queensland’s largest cities that has no dedicated gay bar.
This number is likely to continue to grow according to OUT committee member Kevin.
“People are arriving here everyday it seems,” he said.
The monthly party has been active for almost 18 months thanks to support from the wider community.
“Different crowds come each time and it’s always a fun and exciting night,” Kevin said
Cairns seems to be heading towards the status of becoming another gay Mecca.
Kevin told QNews that there was a large community of older Gays and Lesbians who had made the move north to be in the sunshine and enjoy the lifestyle.
“There’s now a wider variety of age in Gay people moving to Cairns – a lot of young people have begun to move here now too,” he said.
The OUT crew also host a large festival in August which includes a fair day on the 29th and OUT’s largest party of the year on the 21st.
“That OUT party has numbers of up to 650 – and it keeps getting bigger,” Kevin said.
OUT Cairns is definitely providing the community with a social outlet and if the numbers continue to grow it wouldn’t be surprising if a dedicated Gay bar opened in the tropical town.
“There’s definitely call for it,” Kevin said.
