Swim Camp Champs!

Swim Camp Champs!

While most of us were chomping down on our third Easter egg over 60 swimmers from the East Coast of Australia converged on the Valley Pool in Brisbane for the Annual Aqualicious Swim Camp.  A now regular feature of the Aqualicious calendar, the Aqualicious Swim Camp was held on the Easter weekend of the 11th & 12th of April and featured swimmers with a range of abilities from the country's three largest Gay & Lesbian Swim Teams:  Aqualicious (Brisbane), The Wett Ones (Sydney) and Glamourheads (Melbourne).

Lawrie Fabian, Coach of Aqualicious and organizer of the event told QNews“The goal of the Swim Camp is to provide coaching and inspiration from some of Australia and the World's current and past elite level swimmers. It is also about bringing together our squads as we prepare to participate in National and International events, including the upcoming Outgames in Copenhagen”.

A highlight of the event was the guest coaching from previous World Champion Daniel Kowalski, along with current Australian Champions Christian Sprenger and Jessica Schipper. Each provided guidance on technique and an insight into the life of an elite swimmer.

Jess Schipper was delighted with the attendance and improvement of the swimmers telling QNews “Wow, I'm not used to people actually doing what I train them - these guys listen and improve so quickly - its just fantastic.”

The event was partially funded by QAHC through their Healthy Communities Fund to promote the health and wellbeing of the LGBT community and provide access to a range of healthy lifestyle options. A celebratory dinner on the final night of the camp capped off a successful weekend which seems likely to result in a great haul of medals for swimmers competing in upcoming events.
