Vodafone - the world’s largest mobile telecommunications company has apologised for a homophobic rant that was sent out to 10,000 people via the company’s official UK Twitter account earlier this month.
According to the Guardian, Vodafone posted the following tweet: “VodafoneUK is fed up of dirty homo’s and is going after beaver.”
News of Vodafone’s tweet spread quickly, leaving people to believe that the account had been hacked, but this theory was quickly laid to rest with Vodafone’s admission that the tweet had been made by a disgruntled employee.
“We weren’t hacked. A severe breach of rules by staff in our building, dealing with that internally. We’re very sorry.”
“Please keep your faith in us.”
Vodafone has since apologised numerous times, including individualised apologies to everyone who made a complaint. The employee in question - a customer service representative who works (at least for now) at Vodafone’s Stoke-based web team has been suspended indefinitely.
