Now an independent Queensland senator, Glenn Lazarus has issued a warning to anyone who doesn’t support gay marriage should a referendum ever be held on the issue.
“I will turn up at parliament in a mankini,” he told ABC radio.
Senator Lazarus wants the public, not politicians, to decide the same-sex marriage issue because putting reform in the hands parliamentarians would be counter-productive.
He believes most people would support gay marriage in a referendum.
“I think you should take it to a referendum, because unfortunately a lot of politicians are bound by party policy,” Sen Lazarus said.
“If two people love each other, whether they both have penises or vaginas, they should be allowed to be married.”
