104-year-old grandfather Alex has a very simple reason for voting ‘Yes’ to gay marriage – he wants his grandson, Paul, to be happy.
As voting draws to a close, Australian Marriage Equality has released a heart-warming video in which Alex explains why the law should be changed.
Alex was married to his wife, Betty, for 45 years, before she died in 2009 after a long and happy marriage and he wants his grandson, who is gay, to enjoy the same happiness.
He said: “Having lived through 104 years, you accept people as they are.”
Paul had emailed his grandfather – “of course all 104-year-olds are on email” – and asked how he would be voting in the postal survey.
Alex was quick to respond: “Dear Paul, the answer is YES!”
He went on to say he can’t understand what all the fuss and commotion is about “because they’re human beings like ourselves, and should have all the rights and privileges as ourselves”.
