What’s On In Queensland For World AIDS Day 2016

The organisers of this year’s World AIDS Day are calling on people to help make history and join in efforts to end the HIV epidemic in Queensland.

Queensland Positive People Executive Officer Simon O’Connor said the theme of World AIDS Day 2016 “E.N.D. H.I.V.” which is the slogan of the state government’s current awareness campaign.

“The aim is to encourage the community to talk about HIV, to remind the community that the HIV epidemic is still a major health issue in Queensland, and to raise community awareness, break down barriers and educate our community,” he said.

“The aim of World AIDS Day is to raise consciousness in the community about HIV issues, including understanding the needs of, and support for people living with HIV: the need for the enhancement of existing education and prevention initiatives; and the development and implementation of innovative new ones.”

“Thanks to recent advances in HIV treatments and testing technologies, we now have increased opportunities to virtually eliminate HIV transmission in Queensland by the end of the decade.”

Introduced in June 2013, Queensland was the first state to provide free rapid HIV testing in public sexual health clinic, extending to selected GP clinics in October 2013 and to community based services in June 2014 and continues to grow. The rapid test deliver results in only 20 minutes.

In 2014, 245 people in Queensland were diagnosed with HIV, which is an increase from the 181 people diagnosed in Queensland in 2013, after a steady increase since 1999.

Mr O’Connor is encouraging the people of Queensland to join in events to celebrate the lives of those prematurely lost to HIV and help raise awareness of the continuing battle against the spread of the virus.

“I encourage everyone this World AIDS Day to show your support: wear a red ribbon, talk to your friends and work colleagues about HIV or make a donation to an AIDS charity. Compassion, knowledge and action are the strongest weapons we have in the fight against HIV,” he said.
