Local gay rugby team the Brisbane Hustlers have beaten the Sydney Convicts to win this year’s Purchas Cup.
The Cup, known as the gay rugby equivalent of the Bledisloe, sees gay rugby teams from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and New Zealand compete for the trophy each year.
In Saturday’s grand final, the Brisbane Hustlers defeated the Sydney Convicts 22-10, after earlier beating the New Zealand Falcons 21-5.
Accepting the trophy on Saturday night, Hustlers captain JB Cousin thanked everyone involved in the competition.
“The absolutely amazing thing about this tournament is that we are driven to improve,” he said.
“To our competition, thank you for driving us to improve. I want you to come and try to take the cup again, and I want to take it off you, forever.”
The Purchas Cup is named after Sydney Convicts founding captain Andrew Purchas, and is the precursor to the biennial international Bingham Cup tournament.
Last May, the Melbourne Chargers beat the Convicts in the Bingham Cup grand final to become the current world champions.
The 2018 Bingham Cup will be held in Amsterdam next June.
