Revamped Gold Coast gay hotspot MP’s Nightclub has opened its doors for the first time in seven years.
MP’s, short for Meeting Place and located on Orchid Avenue in Surfers Paradise, relaunched on Australia Day Eve with a night of entertainment from DJ’s and local drag talent.
Brisbane-born drag queen Vanilla Foldher (pictured above right) performed on opening night and said she was so excited to be hosting every Friday and Saturday night at the venue.
“I first started drag in Brisbane, and I’ve performed around Queensland and internationally in New York and Orlando for a while,” she said.
“I’ve come back to Australia and I’m so ready to take on the hostess role.
“I’ve always loved the creative side of drag. I just love the social aspect too, it’s so much fun. You make so many friends and you get to help a lot of people.”
Local drag performer Alexis Diamond (pictured above left) will host every Sunday night and said the relaunch of MP’s is months in the making.
“I’m very excited about MP’s, I think it’s going to be a fantastic turnout,” she said.
“I have high hopes for the venue and the Gold Coast.”
Alexis has entertained at numerous venues across the state and said she first got started in drag after encouragement from friends.
“When I was younger I didn’t know much about drag. I had a couple friends who did it and they asked if I’d ever do it and I said probably not,” she said.
“But I’ve always loved being on stage. Some of my friends put me in drag after I’d said no, and I loved it.
“I’ve always said that when I stop having fun doing drag is when I’ll give it up.”
Queensland drag performers Tina Bikki, Scarlett Fever and Coco Verdose will also perform at MP’s, now open evenings from Wednesday to Sunday.
The venue’s revival comes a few months after the re-opening of nearby gay nightclub Rise – formerly Escape – on Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise.
