Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott will get a frosty reception if he walks into his local Ben and Jerry’s store and orders a double scoop of his favourite ice cream.
Ben and Jerry’s in Manly is refusing to serve two scoops of the same flavour to customers until same-sex marriage is legalised in Australia.
The American company, which has a long history of LGBTI support, is encouraging customers in its 26 stores nationwide to send a message to their local MPs.
Ben and Jerry’s has created its own postal system which allows people to write their support for marriage equality on a postcard, which staff will deliver.
Manly store manager Mel Court told the Manly Daily she was looking forward to handing Mr Abbott the postcards.
“He (Mr Abbott) needs to realise that there are so many people supporting it that there is no reason not to be legalised, you should be able to marry the person you love,” she said.
“I feel very passionate and I know a lot of people here are passionate about it, you should be able to marry the person you love, and who is to say that you can’t,
“It creates a discussion, if someone asks for two scoops of the same flavour we will prompt them to fill out one of the postcards, put it in the box and send it out to their local MP.”
It seems Mr Abbott is cold on the idea as to date he has declined to comment to the Manly Daily on the initiative.
