A gay Italian escort has reportedly written a 1200-page dossier outing 40 Catholic priests as “actively gay” in a bid to expose their religious hypocrisy.
Mangiacapra told local outlet Catania Today, as translated by the Daily Mail, that all he wants is for the priests to “stop preaching hatred towards gays” and says he wrote the document for “the health of the church”.
“We are talking about bad apples which, in my opinion, should not to be punished but should have the opportunity to come into contact with and reconcile their own homosexuality,” he said.
The dossier reportedly includes chat logs from messaging platform WhatsApp and other evidence.
Mangiacapra alleged some of the priests spent “hundreds of euros” on gay escorts, some had sent him nude photos and he “couldn’t stand their hypocrisy any longer.”
“As a person who enjoys sexual freedom, I do not condemn the homosexuality of the priests,” he said.
“Homosexuality is not a crime, what is condemned is the incoherence of these priests.”
Mangiacapra stressed he was not accusing priests or seminarians of having sex with minors, and his dossier covered “sins, not crimes.”
In a statement translated by the Associated Press, the archdiocese of Naples said the dossier had been sent to the Vatican.
Cardinal Cresenzio Sepe said none of the priests named in the document worked in Naples, but he forwarded the document to the Vatican because “there remains the gravity of the cases for which those who have erred must pay the price, and be helped to repent for the harm done.”
