NIKE AXES BOXER MANNY PACQUIAO OVER ANTI-GAY SLUR

Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao has lost a sponsorship deal with Nike after he described gay couples as “worse than animals”.

Manny caused controversy when he told a Filipino TV station earlier this week: “Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female.

“If men mate with men and women mate with women, they are worse than animals.”

The devoutly Christian boxer, who has also been a politician in the Phillipine House of Representatives since 2010, apologised for the remarks in a statement on Instagram.

But Nike weren’t having it, severing all ties with the boxer after a decade of sponsorship.

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent,”  the sports brand said in a statement.

“Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.

“We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

Nike has reportedly removed all Pacquiao-branded clothing from its online stores.
