An estimated 20,000 women converged on California at the end of March for ‘The Dinah,’ the world’s biggest lesbian festival. 2016
The women gathered for five days of sun, sex, pool parties and live music at the festival’s home in Palm Springs in the California desert from March 30 to April 3.
A 24-year-old reveller told The Guardian: “Flashing is normal. I get flashed at a lot. Random girls pulling you into their hotel rooms are also pretty standard.”
Lady Gaga was in this year’s crowd to watch her friend Katherine Moennig – who played Shane on the lesbian drama The L Word — spin a DJ set. Samantha Ronson and Orange is the New Black star Lea DeLaria were also in attendance.
The event is named after the famous golfer Dinah Shore, who wasn’t a lesbian herself. But a prestigious golf tournament also named after Dinah was attracting increasing numbers of queer women, who all went looking for fun in their downtime.
And the now-infamous Dinah Shore women’s festival was born.
Mariah Hanson, founder of The Dinah, said that “there’ll always be a need for gay people to come together and congregate.”
“The message is always the same: Here’s a space for you to celebrate your life, live out loud, and simply love,” she said.
