Central Queensland Pride Fair Day is ready to rock Rockhampton next week at the Central Queensland University. Held on Saturday 20 September, the pirate themed fair day is a free event for all LGBT people along with their families & friends, and will feature live entertainment, market stalls, sausage sizzle, access to a variety of services, activities and prizes. An official ClubRok after party will also be held at Flamingo’s on Quay.
CQ Fair Day representative Alan Flood told QNews that the event stemmed from a need to let locals know that there was LGBT support for them in the area and has since grown into a vibrant celebration.
“Back in 2011, there was an article in our Morning Bulletin crowning Rocky as the Homophobe capital of Australia, so we realised the need for Central Queensland Fair Day to counter that attitude and be more visible.” Flood said.
“CQ Fair Day this year is set for Saturday 20th September followed immediately by Club Rok later that night with the theme of ‘Pirates’. CQFD is our version of a gay pride day but toned down a bit so that it remains a family friendly event for the LGBTI community and their friends.”
“The day is really about connecting with others, meeting new friends and giving people the opportunity to play a part in the future of what for many of us is our home and community,” Flood said. “I believe the most important thing we can do in the age of social media is to actually encourage people to leave their homes and come out see and enjoy what makes the LGBTI community of Central Queensland so special.”
Central Queensland Fair Day takes place 12pm-4pm on Saturday 20 September at the CQ University, Rockhampton campus. Entry is free. The official ClubRok after party will be held 8:30-2am at Flamingo’s on Quay.
