A new English-subtitled trailer for the biopic of legendary gay artist Tom of Finland has been released.
The film follows the life of the man behind the iconic gay artwork, Touko Laaksonen, who returned home to Finnish capital Helsinki after serving in World War II, only to find widespread persecution of homosexual men.
Touko conducted secret affairs with men and was under pressure to marry a woman, but he found freedom – and a worldwide following – through the homoerotic artwork of muscular, leather-clad men he created under the pen name “Tom of Finland”.
“This is the story of a man ahead of his time, bravely standing up against a world virulently against his right to be who he was – a homosexual man with homosexual fantasies,” director Dome Karukoski said.
“The story shows how literally one person can create change in the world, even with something as simple as an artist’s tools.”
The movie screened in Brisbane during Palace Cinemas’ Scandanavian Film Festival in July, and will be released to select Australian cinemas in October.
